Day 4, Puerto Varas, a rainy view

Sadly, our third day in Santiago was lost to food poisoning, in bed all day. We had booked a tour to a nearby winery, as Chile is known for wine.  And we had hoped to visit the Mercado, maybe a museum, and see something of the wealthier part of town.  But...we head to the airport the next day for Puerto Montt.

Santiago Airport had a fabulous suitcase sculpture just before entering security!

No window seat to take photos during the flight, which was only 1.5 hours.  And it was rainy on arrival. Puerto Varas is about 15 minutes away from Puerto Montt. While Puerto Montt is the regional capital and important for its fishing industry on the ocean, the tourists, and residents we are told, live in the nearby towns like Puerto Varas.

Our Puerto Varas hotel, Hotel Puelche, is on Lake Llanquihue, the largest lake in Chile.  Confined to indoors in the rain, our room has a spectacular view to the lake, and we are treated to intense rainbows!

and somewhere beyond the clouds are volcanos

Dinnertime, we taxi the short mile into town, and enjoy a feast of king crab. A big mound of it for less than $20, and it is delicious!  The restaurant Las Buenas Brasas had beautiful gardens, and with a short break in the rain we got a good photo op.  But starting to walk the pretty town center, rain pours again, and we taxi back to the hotel...hoping for sun tomorrow!
